Description
The Kwele are a tribal group from Eastern Gabon, Congo and Cameroon in West Africa. They fled the coastal area of West Africa in the 19th century, after having acquired firearms from the slave traders. This migration is often called the "Poupou" war. The Kwele settled on land between the Dja and Ivindo rivers. The Kwele are known for their ceremonial masks that are collected as art objects. Kwele masks are called "Ekuk". These masks were hung in the homes and rarely worn except during rare initiation ceremonies to worship "bwété". Its function was to lead a village so that the inhabitants could benefit from the healing forces of "bweté". The masks can be recognized by their great expression.
Pablo Picasso has been strongly influenced by these traditional African masks during his African period from 1906 to 1909. Sold without stand
