Item Details
Description
Chinese Ming Dynasty gilt bronze Buddha figure of Shakyamuni in formal figure. The sculpture face in serene expression flanked by pendulous earlobes, the ushnisha topped with a knobs. In a formal posture, gold in color with one face and two hands he gazes forward with half closed eyes. The hair on the head is piled in a topknot ushnisha crowned with an ornament and the earlobes are long and pierced - reflecting his youth spent as a prince. Adorning the middle of the forehead is a white dot urna between the eyebrows and the neck displays three curved lines. Extended across the right knee the fingertips of the hand touch the ground calling the personified goddess of the earth to witness the moment of perfect enlightenment. The left hand is placed in the lap in the mudra gesture of meditation supporting a black begging bowl - a gift from the Kings of the Four Directions. The right arm is bare and the left covered in the fashion of a Buddhist monk. With the two feet crossed in vajra posture, right over left upon a double lotus throne. Sets upon a multi leveled pedestal, surrounded by the demountable rays of nimbus light emanate from the pedestal throne. Extensive trace of gilt, blue and red pigment on the hair and aureole. The throne underside with incised quatrefoil flori-form petal visvavajra mark surrounding the centralized DaiJi.

Mark on the throne pedestal, incised six script -KaiShu- characters, YongLe Reign Period of Great Ming.

PROVENANCE:
From a Maryland private collector. Same collections can be found on Lot 97, 99, 102, 285, and 288.
Condition
Excellent condition, with normal anomalies in nature, sign of stressed surface, minor scratch & dent. Surface traced wear and or declined to gilding. Normal, considering ages and wears.
