Description
The Chinese Qing Dynasty grayish celadon jade carved in shape of a globular body, raised on splayed foot ring, banded rims supported the domed lid, crowned with flaring flower petal finial. Two dragon masks suspended from the rim created both handles. The exterior adorned with relief of geometrical archaic taotie pattern. The jade censer preciously presented upon an open-work carved hardwood stand with conforming motif. The nephrite jade shows grayish-celadon color, with moist milky appearance and attractive sporadic light and darker hues of natural inclusions. This jade censer conformed all required specimen to be high valued Chinese jade wares, with finest material, the cleanness, the color, the shape, design, and distinct. The jade is fine and exquisite, the carving smooth, brilliant with a moist appearance, the finishing meticulous.
Mark on base, six gilt carved script -KaiShu- characters, Qianlong's Antique Treasure of Great Qing.
Dimensions: 117.36mm H x 216.9mm Dia.
Stand: 45.6
Weight: 1447.2g
LOT NOTES:
Taotie - Ogre Mask - a sacrificial animal and a warning against avarice, gluttony, sensuality, self indulgence. Stylized Full-face zoomorphic mask with ears, horns and large fangs, but without a lower jaw. In some bronzes the similarity with a water buffalo head without a lower jaw is obvious, but in many others instances this is not the case. It appears on bronze vessels of the Shang dynasty and thereafter on objects in various media, especially those with archaistic decoration. These fantastic creatures may have served as intermediaries between the world of men and the realms of the spirits.
