Description
Chester District of South Carolina. The document is an article of agreement used to address African American Freedmen in the turbulent 1860’s South. The article makes mention of former plantation that the person came from. The article then makes mention that the Freedman must agree to work faithfully six days in each successive week. The article goes on to make mention that the person must be polite and respectful to his agent and the members of his white family. The agreement also entails sharing certain tools on the plantation and returning them within a given amount of time in good condition. The contract concludes with a provision which states if any part of the agreement is broken the Freedman forfeits their share of the crop as agreed upon.
