Item Details
Description
General Thomas Jonathan “Stonewall” Jackson Memorial Medal, 1863.Head l. of brilliant Confederate commander killed by “friendly fire” near war’s end. Rev Tobacco and corn wreath with 21 battle honors, Bull Run through Antietam. White Metal, 48mm. By Armand Auguste Caqué, struck by Massonet of Paris, France, by order of the Confederate Congress. Medals were seized by the Union blockade and languished for years in a Savannah warehouse. Housed in a brass bezel with glass covers, crudely enclosed in a battered outer metal frame painted black. The medal was obviously a treasured heirloom of a diehard Confederate, possibly a veteran who fought under Jackson. The very crudity of its housing adds to its historicity.

Provenance: From an important Greenwich, CT estate.
Condition
Uncirculated condition, the outer case is VF.
