Early 20th century, 137 x 117 cm, Morocco, Anti-Atlas
In Morocco, large headscarves of this kind featuring abstract designs are known as "adghar". They were produced by two Berber tribes, the Ida ou Zeddoute and the Ait Abdallah of the Anti-Atlas region, and worn by their women. Initially plain white, the coarse woollen tabby cloth was later treated in a particular dyeing technique described as "Berber batik". Older examples display four colours while later ones only show three. – Minimal signs of wear, good condition.
