Description
Mid 19th century, 204 x 164 cm, South East Caucasus, Moghan region
Whereas the flatweaves of the various Shahsavan tribes have now been comprehensively discussed and illustrated in literature, a detailed examination of their pile rugs is yet to follow. We can assume with certainty that this extremely rare pile rug with a jajim stripe design was woven by the Shahsavan. The design layout and palette point to the Moghan region. Similar to jajims, alternately patterned or plain vertical bands create a rhythmic sequence due to their different widths and colours. Animals and humans, small shrubs, stars, amulets and combs incorporated into the design bands tell a story of the nomadic weavers’ living environment. Our example was first published by the Kailash gallery in 1994, and following the gallery owner’s tragic death by accident, sold by us in 1997. It has now been reconsigned by the then buyer, a well-known American collector. Bausback published the only immediately comparable example in 1978 (describing it as a Sivas). – Slight signs of age and wear, small restored areas; the lower finish has been partially filled in.
BAUSBACK, PETER, Antike Orientteppiche. Brunswick 1978, pl. p. 127
AMPE, PATRICK & RIE, Textile Art. A personal choice (Kailash Gallery). Antwerp 1994 = RIPPON BOSWELL, A 48, 22/11/1997, # 145
