Description
This is an American Mote Spoon, it is marked 925/1000. The handle is twisted and ends in an arrow like shape. The bowl of the spoon is not pierced but has floral repousse. This spoon is 8 1/4" long and 1 3/8" wide.
The Mote-spoon is a fun and puzzling spoon, it is also known as the stirrer-spoon. It has a long tapering stem ending in a barbed spike shaped like an arrow. and often has a rat-tail attachment to the bowl. The bowl is usually pierced and the spoon is not likely to be fully marked. They were made in both England and America. The English spoons were made in the mid 1700's with American example showing up in the 1800's and on.The mote spoon has a rich and interesting history. These long handled spoons were were used to remove floating tea leaves from a cup. The pointed tip was used to remove clogged tea leaves from a tea pot’s spout. This tea accessory is highly collectible and useful!
