Item Details
Description
  • James, Henry
  • The Awkward Age: A Novel
  • Hard Cover. New York: Harper & Brothers Publishers, 1899. 1st Edition. Near Fine.
  • First American edition, first printing, second issue measuring 1 3/8" thick and with serif lettering to the spine. One of 1,000 copies. With autograph letter signed adhered to the front pastedown. Publisher's red-brown cloth, lettered in gilt. Near fine, with some light wear to the extremities, minor fraying to the spine ends, a hint of rubbing to the hinges, bright gilt, clean interior. A fresh and attractive copy. Edel and Laurence A53b. This copy includes an autograph letter addressed to "Gilder" and signed by the author "H. James". In the letter, James accepts the addressee's invitation and promises to pass it along to Edwin Lawrence Godkin, founder of The Nation and editor of The New York Evening Post. Godkin and James' professional relationship began in 1865 when Godkin published the still burgeoning writer's work in The Nation's earliest issues. A comraderie quickly developed and the two remained lifelong friends until Godkin's death in 1902. Indeed, while the date and recipient of this letter remain unidentified, this letter was written on stationary with the address 115 East 25th Street, which was the location of Godkin's New York City home in the late 19th century (Powers, Henry James and Edith Wharton, Letters: 1900-1915). Originally published serially in Harper's Weekly from October 1, 1898 - January 7, 1899, The Awkward Age is a novel that tells the story of Nanda Brookenham, a young society woman trying to find her place in her parents' pretentious social circle. The Awkward Age is written almost entirely in dialogue, which, while it allows for a fast-paced plot, limits contextual character development. Accordingly, each of the novel's ten chapters focuses on one of the members of the Brookenham's clique. This first American edition was published on May 12, 1899, less than a month after the first British edition, published on April 25th of the same year.
