  • The Professor's House
  • Hard Cover. New York: Alfred A. Knopf, 1925. Limited. Near Fine.

A near fine or better copy, with some light wear to the extremities, minor toning to the spine, former owner's bookplate to the front pastedown, otherwise bright and fresh pages. An excellent copy. Crane A14. The Professor's House is an autobiographical novel divided into three sections: "Book I: The Family," "Book II: Tom Outland's Story," and "Book III: The Professor." The plot follows the fictional Professor Godfrey St. Peter, who is struggling with a mid-life crisis after the marriage of his two daughters and the death of his friend Tom Outland, who was a casualty in World War I. Interestingly, Cather first wrote the middle section as a short story and subsequently situated it within a separate story she was developing about the professor. Accordingly, the first and last sections take place in the novel's present-day, while the central section is comprised of a retrospective narrative. Like F. Scott Fitzgerald's The Great Gatsby, The Professor's House captures the moral decline and dejection of the Lost Generation in the wake of WWI.
