Description
  • Du Maurier, Daphne
  • Classics of The Macabre
  • Foreman, Michael. Hard Cover. London: Victor Gollancz, Ltd. 1978. Limited. Fine.
  • Illustrated by Michael Foreman. Limited edition of 250 numbered copies. Signed by Du Maurier and Foreman on the limitation page. Publisher's red cloth, spine lettered in gilt, all edges gilt, pictorial gradient red to lilac endpapers with an illustration of birds in flight in black; in the publisher's blue-gray cloth slipcase, with an illustration by Foreman laid onto the front panel. About fine, with a hint of wear to the extremities, small faint spot to the rear board, else fine; slipcase with a hint of wear and a few minor scuffs, else fine. A bright and pleasing copy. Classics of the Macabre is a collection of six of Du Maurier's short stories, including "Don't Look Now," "The Apple Tree," "Blue Lenses," "The Alibi," and "Not After Midnight." Additionally, this volume contains "The Birds," which notably served as the basis for Alfred Hitchcock's 1963 film of the same name. Du Maurier prefaces the collection: "I have always been fascinated by the unexplained, the darker side of life. I have a strong sense of the things that lie beyond our day-by-day perception and experience. It is, perhaps, an extension of this feeling that makes me live through the characters that I create." Indeed, Du Maurier's vivid imagery and eloquent descriptions make these stories beautiful in spite of their grisly themes. Accordingly, the vibrant watercolor illustrations by Michael Foreman, a renowned children's illustrator, complement these stories splendidly.
