Description
Spanish Empire, Mexico City, ca. 1650 CE. A nice example of an oblong silver eight real, with a design of shields and crosses, made in Mexico City. The silver real was the currency of the Spanish colonies in the New World and the Philippines, and was a truly international standard coin. These coins were cut from a silver bar and struck with a hammer onto a coin die, so that they were accurate in weight but often, as here, had irregular shapes and artwork. Size: 1.3" W (3.3 cm); 26.2 grams
