Description
6TH – 4TH CENTURY B.C.Origin: Northern Black sea region, area of Scythians. Length 35,1 cm. Blade: iron blade with central ridge, gradually tapering towards the tip, forming a long triangle. Handle: characteristic Scythian crossguard in shape of butterfly, openwork grip depicting mythic animals. Horn-shaped pommel. Crossguard, grip and pommel covered with golden foil. Notes: Nice example of Scythian akinak type dagger of high rank warrior. Provenance: until 1971 in possession of Mr. Klaus Berman, Vienna. From 1971 in collection of Ing Peter Till, Vienna. In 2005 in collection of Mr. Wolf Seitz. In 2014 sold by Mr. Walter Bilik, Germany.
Condition
in stable excavated condition. Blade affected by corrosion, with pitting and some losses. Losses of golden foil on the handle. Otherwise intact. No restoration or conservation.
