Description

Colorful block print on brown paper by Charles W. Smith (1893-1987,) entitled "The City Gate" in pencil below left, and signed in pencil by the artist below right, (also signed in the print.) Smith lived in New York City for a time, and this scene may have been based on a view of China Town in NYC.. Smith studied at the University of Virginia, Yale, and the Corcoran School of Art. He later chaired the art department at UVA. A recipient of many awards, his work is found in important collections including the Whitney Museum, NY Public Library, Art Institute of Chicago and Yale University.
