Juan Carlos Macia's, "Homenaje a La Mujer" (Homage to the Woman) is a multi faceted portrayal of Frida Kahlo, one of MexicoÂ’s foremost artists and the wife of Diego Riveria. The artistÂ’s triptych depicts no fewer than fifty images of Frida. The works subject matter, seems to acknowledges FridaÂ’s long suffering resulting from injuries sustained during a bus accident, while on the bus, in 1925. The artist's varied portrayals of Frida are coupled with unusual secondary iconography symbolic of her character, as well as representing Frida’s associations with both a European modernism and traditional Mexican folklore. Differences in hairstyles, whether dark and knotted, or blond, cut with bangs or coiffed with curls, may be meant to reference an infusion of European trends into a Mexican society steeped in traditional verse. In this work, Juan Carlos juxtaposes symbolic imagery from MexicoÂ’s indigenous past, such as Pre-Columbian pottery chards, Indian glyphs, an anaconda and a jaguar with a modern sentiment represented by Donald Duck and fashion attributes frequently associated with European cultures. Imagery sometimes appears incomplete and sketch-like, portraits and secondary elements are sometimes humorous, while others are overtly sexual with hints of nudity. FridaÂ’s features convey anguish, determination, pain and surprise. Contemplative glances, heavy black outlining and the artist’s prominent use of red, on what is the most striking representation of Frida in the composition, her driving the bus. The sentiment conveyed, beckons the viewer to share in her tragedy. Juan Carlos Macias directs us towards an acknowledgement of Firda's influences, to celebrate a life rich in experiences and one steeped in both modernism and ritual. Juan Carlos Macias was born in Guadalajara, Mexico, in 1961. He studied art and architecture at the University of Guadalajara, followed by studies at Los Angeles Valley College. He currently resides in both Mexico and the Untied States. He also lived and worked for a number of years in Paris. He has received prominent recognition in more than 20 solo shows and in more than 90 group exhibitions in both Mexico and the US, as well as in France.
