Description

Hank O'Neal: A Vision Shared: A Classic Portrait of America and Its People, 1935-1943.

  • First edition. New York: St. Martin's Press, 1976.

  • Hardcover 13 X 12.25 X 1 inches. 311 p. 288 illustrations.

Includes large-format photographs and comments by John Collier, Jack Delano, Walker Evans, Theo Jung, Dorothea Lange, Russell Lee, Carl Mydans, Arthur Rothstein, Ben Shahn, Marion Post Wolcott, and John Vachon.

  • The only book to present FSA photos in a large format: the most of the images are 11 inches wide.

  • From 1935 to 1942, a group of photographers travelled the United States, under the auspices of the Resettlement Administration, then the Farm Security Administration and finally the Office of War Information.

  • They compiled a unique photographic document of hundreds of thousands of photographs made in the field and maintained by Roy Stryker in Washington (known as the file). A few became well known, some - classics, most of the file remained unknown.

  • The eleven original photographers gathered in the 1970s to select photographs they wished to see published. Not included the Rosskams, Marjory Collins, Gordon Parks and Esther Bubley. These selections, many published for the first time, reproduced as specified by the photographers, with introductions to their life and work followed by a portfolio.

  • Text by Hank O'Neal. Foreword by Ben Shahn's widow Bernarda Shahn. Afterword by Paul S. Taylor.
