Description
RICHMOND, VIRGINIA CONFEDERATE EGG CIVIL WAR GLASS TELEGRAPH INSULATOR deep green to black, threadless egg-style with medial rings and flat top. Richmond Glass Works / Virginia Glass Factory, Rocketts, Richmond, VA. Circa 1860. 4 1/2" H, 3" D base.
(UPDATED 11/6/17) Two shallow chips to top edge, expected chipping to base flange, probably as made. Annealing crack encircling top half, as made.
Provenance: From the William Jones collection, Montross, VA.
Catalogue Note: A group of these insulators, most as fragments/waisters have been recovered at two or more sites in and around Richmond including the site of the glass factory. It is thought they are from the final production at the factory and were abandoned, and destroyed when Union troops occupied and destroyed most of Richmond.
