Description
SILVER HERALDIC GORGET hammered ovular form, with pierced lobes for hanging/mounting, chased crest-like decoration featuring a winged bull or similar mythical beast, and inscribed "Luet. Col. R. Townshend / August 12, 1757" (sic); possibly a "trade silver" gorget. Total weight: 0.8 ozt. Most likely mid 18th century. 4 1/4" x 3 3/8" OA.
Excellent as found condition.
Catalogue Note: There was a British officer named Roger Townshend, who served in the French & Indian Wars, achieving the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. He was killed at the Battle of Fort Ticonderoga (called Fort Carillon by the French), on July 25, 1759.
