Item Details
Description
Red Wooden Carousel Horse – North Tonawanda, NY
This carousel horse was carved in North Tonawanda, New York, circa 1912-1915, by the
Herschell-Spillman Company. The horse was made for a steam powered riding gallery
which traveled from town to town with carnivals or circuses for more than 50 years. This
traveling carousel was broken up in 1969.
March 5, 1969, William Marshall, purchased 10 of these carousel horses from an
antique dealer near Galena, Illinois. At that time the horses were crudely covered with
multiple coats of weathered and cracking brightly colored paint obscuring the original
details and paint. In the 1980’s the horse was stripped of their old “park paint†down to
near the original paint level and then lightly varnished to perserve the old paint. In 1982
one of the horses was a model for American artist Aaron Bohrod’s trompe-l'oeil painting –
Carousel Horse. 54" Long X 41" High 12" Wide
