Description
This is an amazing sterling silver tazza or compote, made in the Medallion pattern by Ball, Black, & Co (NY, NY) around 1870. It has a round bowl with gilt interior. The banded rim is inverted and the two handles have scrolling leaves that split to attach at different points. Under the shallow bowl where it meets the tazza stand is an architectural element; square-like with four medallions of portraits in profile (two male and two female). This really gives the piece dimension.
It measures 8 3/8" tall x 9" wide and weighs 21.3 Troy ounces. It is marked "BALL, BLACK & Co.," "925/1000," and "NEW-YORK."It is in very good condition, especially considering its age. It has a pin point dent to the bowl and a small repair to handle and rim. The handle likely pushed inward, resulting in a need for solder of rim to bowl. The solder is visible to the interior. However, it retains a regal presentation.
