This original lifetime first edition woodblock print depicts a harbor scene, with boats mooring at the docks. It shows ferrymen or boaters coming into and out of harbor, with great ripples in the water. The colors are very natural and beautiful. This print was produced in 1952. This is a first edition by the publisher Unsodo, and bears the Unsodo watermark in the lower left corner, along with the title and artist seals. The print is a large oban measuring 16" x 10.75".

Shiro Kasamatsu (1898-1991) was a Japanese artist who found early success. His prints were seen by Watanabe Shozaburo in 1919, and he published more than 50 prints with them by the late 1940's. He was a part of the shin-hanga movement, which was created from the late Meiji era until World War II, showing a mixture of traditional Japanese and modern western elements.

Condition

This print is in excellent condition, without toning, no tears, pinholes or blemishes, except for the clipping on the bottom right margin, common to Unsodo prints. This print has not been tipped or hung, a nice clean verso. Shiro is considered one of the top ten shin hanga artists, with an immense body of work.
