Description
This print is part of the series that produced 'The Great Wave' print, an iconic image familiar to many. During the Edo period, this region was a residential area for retainers of the shogunate, with many grand houses and mansions. Due to its elevation, it had a grand view over the city of Edo to Mount Fuji beyond. The print is dominated by a slope rising to the left, with the roof of a residence prominently occupying the lower right corner and partially blocking the view of the volcano. People of different social classes traverse the road next to the house; a samurai with three servants in the lower left, and a pilgrim dressed in white at the center are particularly noteworthy. The color on this woodblock is magnificent!
This woodblock was originally published in 1830-34. This print dates to c1920. It measures 15" x 10". It is in excellent condition, with generalized toning, but no tears, pinholes or blemishes. There is a hint of glue residue on the rear upper corners from a previous mount, along with some pencil notations on the rear bottom.
Katsushika Hokusai (1760-1849) was a Japanese artist, ukiyo-e painter and printmaker of the Edo period. He is best known as author of the woodblock print series Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji, which includes the internationally iconic print, The Great Wave off Kanagawa, created during the 1820's.
