Description
1699 1ed Parrhasiana Jean Le Clerc Rhetoric Art of Writing Catholic v Protestant
Jean le Clerc was a Swiss theologian and Bible scholar active at the turn of the 17th-century. While he is most remembered for his Bible commentary and exegetical exercises, he also contributed to political and historical debates with his work “Parrhasiana” a work dedicated to ‘thoughts on several subjects’. In this book, Le Clerc discusses rhetoric, art of writing, history, and poetry, all in a manner that shows the origins in ancient Greek and Roman principles.
While the focus of this book was not to take sides in the Catholic vs Protestant debate, Le Clerc could not help himself when given the opportunity for more theological discussion. He points out that it is damaging to both the Church (Protestant or Catholic) for historians to choose a side, and that neutrality to the religion opposition would be the best course of action. (Perry).
A rare first edition set. Le Clerc referred to himself as Theodore Parrhase;, thus ‘Parrhasiana’.
