Description
Title: Recits d' une Tante, Memoires de la Comtesse... Publisher: Librairie Plon. Publication Date: 1907. Binding: Hardcover. Book Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: No Jacket. This is an assembled, personalized, recovered, complete set of Recits d' une Tante, Memoires de la Comtesse de Boigne, nee d' Osmond (503, 434, 448 & 547 pages), published after the original manuscript by M. Charles Nicoullaud, by Librairie Plon (Paris) in 1907 and 1908, with all text in French. These varied printings (Volume I is noted as the Quatrième Édition, 1907; Vol. II with no edition notice, is a presumed first, dated 1907; Volume III is noted as the Troisième Édition, dated 1907; and Volume IV noted as the Cinquième Édition, is dated 1908) have been uniformly recovered in leather spines with five raised bands, gilt titles and volume numbers toward the tops, initials A. F. S. (Anglo-French Society?) and name, J. Weber Rel, also in gilt, toward the bottoms. The front and back boards are marbled. The cover dimensions are approximately 5.625" x 9". There is no attribution as to bindery, but it's a well done job, with all hinges strong, no loose or missing pages, and with the spines straight and securely connected. There are light scuffs and shallow edge wear, but no significant flaws, with no notable stains or fade, and no tears. All the spines are securely connected, as are all front and back boards. The insides are very good overall, with all the marbled inside cover spreads clean and unfaded, with no stamps or other attachments, no writing or notations, and with the three frontispiece illustrations and the two-sided facsimile documents attached, unfaded and untorn. There is foxing to the areas adjacent to the illustrations, and to some other pages. Most pages have no notable stains. There are no significant tears and only shallow corner creases, to a small number or pages. All the text is unfaded and clearly legible. The accompanying photographs show all illustrations, and are accurate reflections of the book conditions. The Countess was a prominent member of the aristocracy. Her Salon was an important part of the social life of the July Monarchy. This memoir was a favorite book of Marcel Proust. He re-cast the Countess as a character (Madame de Villeparisis) in his masterpiece, À la recherche du temps perdu.
