Description
Truly outstanding miniature painting by Benjamin Davis, done in 1803 of Ann Rudolph Smith and her two sons. She holds a letter in her hand with manuscript text reading, "Ann R Smith" and the backboard has a period pasted paper label reading, "Painted by Bnj. Davis/1803." The boy in blue is William Rudolph Smith and in red is ? Smith. They are the grandsons of Rev. William Smith, D.D., first Provost of Academy of Philadelphia, which in 1779 became the University of Penn. He was an opponent of Benjamin Franklin, founder and first president of Washington College in Maryland.

Slight smudge on reverse painted cover glass margins, else Fine.
