Description
Helgelandia Anno 1649 / Helgeladt in anno Christi 800, 1300 & 1649 [Heligoland (Helgoland) is shown as a single island as it was in the year 1649 (top), and in the years 800, 1300 and 1649 (bottom). ]' As depicted in this 17th century map, today's two islands were connected as a single island until they were separated by a flood in 1720. The two higher parts of the islands shown in the 1649 map at the top otherwise corresponds broadly to the shape of today's islands. The bottom map indicates that these islands were once much larger but have been progressively reduced in size since the dark ages due to flooding. The overall outline of the island in the bottom map is indicated to be the shape of the island in the year 800, while the smaller outlined area of the in the lower left hand part of the bottom map is indicated to be the shape of the island in 1300. Finally, the island in 1649 is shown as a small part of the previous island within the lower map, the shape of which corresponds to that of the top map. According to various chronicles, in 1030 the island was large enough to have had nine parishes, but it suffered terrible floods in 1202 and 1216 during which seven of its nine churches were washed away. A further flood in 1362 destroyed the last two. The submerged land around Heligoland was usually referred to as Utland; according to the Eiderstedt Chronicle in 1362, at midnight there came the greatest of floods; then were drowned most of the folk of Utland.
