Description
This is an excellent copperplate map of the region between the Black Sea, Caspian Sea including regions south of the Caucasus, with lots of detail. This area is now occupied by Ukraine, Russia, Georgia, Armenia, and Azerbaijan. The map is based on the ancient geography and works of Herodotus, Pliny the Elder and Ptolemy. The map is likely also part of Geographia Antiqua by Christopher Cellarius (Keller) who was the Professor of Rhetoric and History at the Martin Luther University of Halle-Wittenberg, Germany. Colored
Christoph Cellarius (1638-1707) was a German classical scholar from Schmalkalden who held positions in Weimar and Halle. He is best remembered for popularizing the tripartite division of history into Ancient-Medieval-Modern with his publication "Universal History Divided into an Ancient, Medieval, and New Period"
