African 20 Fertility Dolls & Other Bust Figures.
c. 20th century. Yaruba, Congolese, Mangbetu, Zaire, Liberia, Ivory Coast, East Africa, Ashanti, Ghana. Carved wood, ebony, clay. All in good condition. Average size is 12"h. Provenance: The Acacia Collection and The Old Slave Mart Museum. Akuaba (Akua ‘mma) fertility dolls. "Fertility dolls were carried by young girls to influence their unborn children. Most of these dolls have vestigial arms, but armlessness per se is not in itself unusual in African figures"(pg 40 & pg 62 Afro American Art & Craft By Chase. Yellow Figure top row far right is an Ancestor figure Resembles Bakota (African) funerary figure, as seen in Ladislas Segy's African Sculpture (New York: Dover Pub., 1958). Est. $1,000-2,000.
