Description
Very Rare Slip-Decorated Redware Plate, Stamped "J. McCULLY / TRENTON", New Jersey origin, circa 1800-1850, with coggled edge, the interior decorated with wavy trails of yellow slip. Reverse with very rare Joseph McCully maker's mark within an oval border. Little is known of the redware products made at a Trenton, New Jersey, operation started by Joseph McCully (b. 1771- d. 1857), and relatively few signed pieces are known. A similar plate resides in the collection of The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City. C-shaped crack on interior, extending through to reverse. Reverse with additional network of surface lines, not visible on interior. Two small rim chips. Diameter 8 1/8".
