Monumental Continental sterling tankard in the Baroque style, circa 1900, having a figural finial in the form of the seated Athena, goddess of war, resting one arm on a shield decorated with the face of a gorgon, surmounting a lid with repousse foliate cartouches and laurel leaves, above a body decorated in the round with a repousse, chased, and engraved scene of a European battle between mounted knights wearing armor and carrying pikes in front of the walls of a castle, above cartouches containing armorial trophies and foliate sprays, the figural scrolled handle having a winged caryatid with a cabochon and acanthus scroll body, attached at one end with a Northwind mask and at the other with a dolphin, the whole rising on a shaped circular foot, with four cartouches and chased scrollwork, marked 'Sterling' underneath, and having three impressed marks near the rim, consisting of a fleur de lis in a rectangle, an indistinguishable mark, and an ostrich in a square, likely Hanau marks, 24"h x 8.25"w x 12"d, weighing 4,351 grams of sterling silver.
