Item Details
Description
Early Spanish Dutch-style charger with what appears to be a family crest, royal coat of arms or the like, with a deer beneath, birds above, and landscape behind. Edit 1: We were contacted by a collector, having noticed a faint shield mark to the center of the plate on the back-middle of the tape, who notified us "You might specify that it likely came from the Tichelaar pottery makers in Makkum/Workum. Interestingly the name on the plate "D.Ju. Ant. Meneses" (possibly meaning Don Julio Antonio de Meneses) is likely a Portuguese name. The three leaves in the shield are leaves from the European columbine and are often used to represent the suffering of Christ. The helmet likely means that he was in the army. The fleeing deer.... possibly he escaped death? But the mystery why a plate for a Portuguese family was commissioned(?) to be produced in a northern province of the Netherlands is a mystery!". Thank you Elly! Edit 2: we were contacted by another collector who notifies us "This is a 17th-century Spanish charger from Manises.Leaping dog motif and style of foliage are typical of this era and style of decoration at Manises. These chargers, and other types of wares, were also decorated in yellow and green glazes. Search "ceramica talavera y puente de Arzobispo" and also search "17th century Spanish ceramics". You will see examples with similar foliage, animals, and so forth on Google and also Pinterest. This charger was made in Spain probably for Don Antonio Meneses. His name appears in several historical records of the times. (The foliage in the crest probably represents fig leaves. "Figueroa," meaning of or near the figs, has six fig leaves in their family crest.)"- Thank you Martha! With repair. Measures 13 1/2" in diameter. Weighs 2lbs.,13oz. THIRD PARTY SHIPPING REQUIRED.
