Description
Metal allow, enamel and gold. Japan, 19th cent.
Rare, four-story inro made of a copper alloy which possibly includes gold, as suggested by the piece's weight as well as shine. The exterior is coated in a clear enamel, in which an intricate pattern of spiral clouds has been inlaid using the cloisonne technique. Both sides feature a central, resplendent aoi-mon, a crest with hollyhock leaves, inside a circle. This was the crest of both the Tokugawa clan as well as the old and still-popular Kamo shrine in Kyoto. The three green-enamel leaves are set against a black background. The crest is also featured on the top of the futa. The interior of the compartments is lined with blue-green enamel.
Condition report: Some signs of aging, but in good condition on the whole
