Description
A George IV Irish silver table spoon, with rat-tail to the heel leading to a crested terminal and engraved inscription verso, hallmarked Laurence Nowlan, Dublin 1823, length measures 9 5/8 inches (24.4 cm). Together with a silver novelty salt and pepper modelled in the form of a milk urn, hallmarked Birmingham 1958 and 1971, a late Victorian silver open salt, of circular fluted form raised upon three ball feet, Sheffield 1889, three William IV silver Fiddle pattern dessert spoons with initialled terminals, a pair of early Victorian Irish silver teaspoons, etc. Gross weight 12.3 ozt (382.8 grams).
Condition
In overall good condition, the lot displays general surface scratches, marks, wear and tarnishing commensurate with the age and use. The George IV table spoon is engraved 'For the BEST PINE - 1824' to the reverse of the terminal with an engraved crest of a ship to the obverse, some minor loss of definition to the rat-tail, further marked 'Stewart' alongside the hallmarks. Minor dents and bumps to the salt and pepper. The open salt has remnants of a sticker and residue on part of the fluting. The three William IV spoons are each engraved with an 'S' to the terminal, the Victorian Irish spoons have rat-tails which are slightly worn, some of these examples have sticky residue to the terminals. Various maker's marks and dates on the other silver spoons, three have engraved initials and monograms. Hallmarks worn in places but majority still legible.
