Description
Central Asia, Sri Lanka, Sinhalese, Kandy Period, ca. late 18th to early 19th century CE. A fine decorative earthenware impressed brick tile that depicts Hansa (the sacred goose) carrying a lotus in its mouth. This animal is commonly represented in both Hindu and Theravada Buddhist art and symbolizes the escape from the cycle of birth, death, and rebirth. Along with the Singha (lion), the Hansa is emblematic of Sri Lanka and frequently seen in various forms of Sinhalese Art. Size: 7.1" W x 4.5" H (18 cm x 11.4 cm); 5.65" H (14.4 cm) on included custom stand.
