VINTAGE COLLECTIBLE Medieval Military History Biography In Dust Jacket. "Eleanor Of Aquitaine & The Four Kings" by Amy Kelly. HARDCOVER 1950 Harvard University Press 1st Edition, Stated 20th printing with "Twentieth Printing" on copyright page. Exactly as shown in listing scan(s). Nice Collectible 1st Edition 1st Printing hardcover copy IN DUST JACKET.
"Eleanor was an amazing woman who lived a life of intrigue, passion and adventure but so much about her is steeped in myth. This book dispels those myths using a wealth of primary sources and what we know of the archaeological record and the period to understand Eleanor and the world she lived in. She grew up in a rich culture where troubadours roamed, where her grandfather was an adventurous and also outrageous figure. She was one of the most coveted women in Europe since she inherited her father's title of Ruler of the rich Duchy of Aquitaine and who engineered with Henry Plantagenet, after he had been recognized as Duke of Normandy, her own marriage with him. He took the throne of England, after King Stephen's death when Stephen was forced to recognize Henry, the son of his bitter rival Queen Matilda, as his heir after his own son had died. Eleanor formed an empire with the resultant Henry II, but unfortunately they were too well matched for each other. Both were stubborn, ambitious, and proud and Henry's constant cheating, especially with the "fair Rosamund", Henry’s mistress, made their relationship one of the best and the worst in the english royal family there ever was. when Eleanor rebelled, it marked the end of their powerful union. Although she was released on several occasions for special events, she still remained a prisoner. Only when her favorite son Richard I became King was she restored to her position of power and was even named his Regent while he was off Crusading."
