First published in 1711 without illustrations. One of 500 royal octavo copies (total of 734 limited edition copies issued). 24 chapters, each lampooning in word and image a personality or behavioral characteristic (''Buffoon,'' ''Newsmonger,'' ''Quack,'' etc.). With engraved frontis portrait of James Puckle by T. Bragg, engraved title with drinking spectacle at top engraved by Jno. Thomosen, list of Subscribers, 2 initials, 23 vignette engravings (mostly tailpieces) and 24 engravings of the ''characters'' by J. Thompson, others.
Condition
Edges moderately worn, some soil and small portion of front cover darkened. Sporadic foxing to contents, abrasion top of ''To The Reader'' leaf.
