Description
Africa, Madagascar, ancient seas, ca. 400 million years ago. A tall group of ammonites and other ancient shells fossilized in a hardened grey matrix. The ammonites range in color from a rich reddish brown to bright orange, while the other shells have hues of creamy whites, deep greys, browns, and reds. Ammonite are an extinct marine mollusk that was related to the still-living coleoid family, including octopus and squid. The name "ammonite" came from Pliny the Elder after the Egyptian god Ammon, who was typically depicted wearing ram's horns that Pliny thought these fossils resembled. Size: 8.75" W x 15.85" H (22.2 cm x 40.3 cm)
