Description
Greece, ca. late 5th to 4th century BCE. A dramatic solid cast bronze figure depicting Zeus (Roman Jupiter) posed in the manner of the colossal Artemision Bronze (National Archaeological Museum of Athens) with his left leg advancing and his arms extended - the right arm behind poised to hurl the thunderbolt in his grip along the sight line defined by his extended left arm. Zeus' long hair is pulled to the back of his head and tied in a chignon at the nape; the mighty god's eyes peer out from his bearded visage focussing intently upon the target. Zeus was regarded as the sky and thunder god who reigned as the king of the gods of Mount Olympus, and was regarded as the father of all gods, even gods who were not his natural children. A remarkable example, so fine and rare to find a Greek bronze rendering! Size: 6.5" W x 7.5" H (16.5 cm x 19 cm); 8.5" H (21.6 cm) on included custom stand.
