Description
Stella, Frank (American, born 1936), Moby Dick (from the Wave Series), 1989, Lithograph and linocut in colors with hand-coloring and collage, measuring 74 x 55 inches (190.5 x 139.7 cm), pencil signed, dated `89' and numbered 53/60 in pencil (there were also 10 artist's proofs), published by Waddington Graphics, London. framed in a maple wood frame measuring 78 x 57 inches, Between 1985 and 1993, Stella produced a number of works that were inspired by Herman Mellville’s Moby Dick. He did three series The Moby Dick Engravings, The Moby Dick domes and Moby Dick deckle edges. Stella found this text very visual and the narrative was something he took inspiration from. Stella has said of the text, “I find the prose pictorial in a way – the rhythms and everything are like the types of things that you can do using shapes.†His series of works are linked to the movement of the word with the image. He has said in the past, “the imagery and activity is somewhat akin to what happens in the book, there’s a lot of turbulence, and a lot of movement and the language is very colorful.â€
