Item Details
Description
Donated By: Donick Cary, Emmy-Award winning writer/producer (Letterman /Simpsons / Parks and Recreation /Silicon Valley)

New World, Mexico, Spanish Colonial style, ca. 19th century CE. A well-loved example of a hand-carved wooden santo depicting St. Anthony of Padua holding the Christ Child. He stands on a thin pedestal, his robes painted green and silver, his hair in the classic Franciscan tonsure, with an attached tin loop that was probably once used for holding a halo. This santo has been placed inside of a newer - probably late 19th to early 20th century CE - wooden nicho that has a square glass panel in the upper portion of the door. The door is attached by two hinges and old examples of iron nails are found throughout the nicho. Size: 6" L x 5.9" W x 15.25" H (15.2 cm x 15 cm x 38.7 cm)

St. Anthony was a Portuguese Franciscan priest and friar who died in Padua, Italy. Despite being born into a wealthy family, he was known for his intense devotion to the poor and sick, and holds the distinction of being canonized most quickly of all the saints. He is also known as the patron saint of lost things - objects, people, and souls. In art, he is often depicted with a book and the infant Jesus, based on a commonly told story of him reading a book and seeing the Christ Child's image in it.

Santos played an important role in bringing the Catholic Church to the New World with the Spanish colonists. These religious figures were hand-carved and often furnished with crowns, jewels, and other accessories, usually funded by religious devotees, and were used as icons to explain the major figures - Mary, Christ, and the saints - to new, indigenous converts. Likewise, they served as a connection to the Old World for Spanish colonists far from home. They became a folk art tradition in the Spanish New World, from modern day Guatemala to as far north as New Mexico and Colorado. Many of them were lovingly cared for over the years, with repairs and paint added as they aged, and played an active part for a long time in the religious life of their communities.

Condition
Nicho is newer than santo, with light signs of wear and new glass. Light patina on surface from age and handling. Santo has losses to pedestal and is also missing one hand. Its paint has losses and there are signs of overpainting, as is common with santos.

Making music happen since 2009…

Today, Musack's mission is to give kids and teens a voice through music by providing guitars, drums, and support for music teachers - wherever the need arises.

But back in 2009, Emmy-Award winning writer/producer Donick Cary (Letterman /Simpsons / Parks and Recreation /Silicon Valley) began Musack with a simple vision - raise money to fund musical programs for his hometown high school on Nantucket Island. After a rash of teen suicides on the island, Donick thought about how he and his friends got through their teen years. Music.

Musack continues to make music happen around the world with support from people like you. All lots offered for sale in today’s fundraising auction have been donated by celebrities, non-celebrities, and local businesses. Help us help our kids - bid high, bid often!
