Item Details
Description
A very impressive ”Mae Starr” talking and singing doll made by the Effanbee Doll Co. It was released in 1928, at the end of the production period of the Madame Hendren doll. This has basically the same type of phonograph as the Hendren model described above with the mechanism in the torso, the crank in the side and the funnel speaker in the front. Mae Starr has a cloth torso and upper arms and legs with a stitched hip joint. She has a composition shoulder head and lower arms and legs. She is a very large 30” tall with a lovely blonde human hair wig, blue/gray celluloid sleep eyes, and open mouth with two upper teeth and tongue. She has been appropriately and attractively redressed. Her composition is in good condition with just some fading and light crazing which is to be expected of a doll this age. Her mechanism works. Included are 8 cylinders. Included in this lot is another Effanbee “Mae Starr” doll with the same type of mechanism. The composition has been professionally refinished with a short molded and painted hair style, which is very rare to find. The mechanism works but there are no records. The last doll in this lot is a small but darling black composition “Topsy” doll with composition shoulder head and arms on a cloth torso stamped “Genuine Madame Hendren Doll 112 Made in U.S.A.” She has three cute little yarn braids tied with red ribbons in her black molded hair. Her clothing appears original but there is soil on her apron and the soles of her shoes are missing. Added to this lot is an antique white painted wicker chair. This is a lot with appeal to both phonograph and doll collectors! Condition: (Very Good). Dimensions: Largest 32"T.
