Item Details
Description
In the mid to late 1800's, the Chinese and Japanese migrated or were brought by companies to Montana for work since they were compensated in lower wages. Jobs were being taken and businesses were even being built by the Asian communities, which angered many of the Montana population. As labeled, the "Victory Labor Management Committee of Butte, Montana" created this sign, depicting an Asian faced figure with a big head, large buck teeth and pointed ears in front of an octopus's body. Above the caricature reads "So Happy/ Hide Tools From Partner" and nailed onto the wooden sign are two monkey wrenches, a saw, an axe, etc.. This comes as American workers would hide the tools from the Chinese and Japanese to prevent them from performing. Wear is seen throughout but this is a fantastic and eerie historical piece. Condition: (Good). Dimensions: 37"T x 46-1/2"W.
