Christ Immanuel, 17th century, North Russia, tempera on wooden board, size 30.5 x 26 cm. The iconography of Christ Emmanuel is based on Isaiah 7:14: “Therefore the Lord himself shall give you a sign; Behold, a virgin shall conceive, and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel.” The name Emmanuel is translated from Hebrew as “God is with us”. Icons of Christ Emmanuel depict Christ as a young, beardless child or young man. His high forehead expresses his infinite wisdom as pre-existent Logos. Other so-called prefigurations of Christ are the Holy Wisdom and Christ the Blessed Silence. Traditional icons of Christ Immanuel show the young Jesus with a face older than his years, illustrating the contrast between his human age and his ageless wisdom.
