East Asia, Japan, Meiji Period, ca. late 19th to early 20th century CE. A really gorgeous boxwood netsuke, depicting a bird, perhaps a female mandarin duck. Netsuke depicting animals are known for their intense, naturalistic detail, and this is an excellent example of that style. Tiny glass beads form eyes, and a dense network of incised lines create the varied pattern of the plumage on the lower body. Every inch of the bird is detailed, including carved feet drawn up against its body on its underside; a signature is lightly incised near the feet, between two drilled perforations for use. The netsuke is an example of the art of everyday objects. They are small sculptures designed to be worn so that objects could be suspended from the traditional sash (obi) that wraps around the kimono. They were used to carry purses, smoking accoutrement, and inro, "seal baskets", which held seals and medicines. The netsuke, made with two holes through it, was used as a toggle to stop the cord on which those items were suspended.
