Item Details
Description
Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 1st to 3rd century CE. A mold-made ceramic statue of a seated Cupid (Eros to the Greeks), here a chubby, naked baby with wings, holding what may be a musical instrument in his hands, which are pressed to his chest. In the Roman period, Cupid had become a child (in earlier Greek times, he was often a muscular youth), but he retains his mischievous air, ready to help couples fall in love through not-entirely-innocent interventions. This small example is probably a copy of a larger statue that would have graced Roman public life, bought as a souvenir to be kept by an individual who treasured it, perhaps as a memory of their own love, or placed into a domestic altar. Size: 3" W x 4.7" H (7.6 cm x 11.9 cm); 5.8" H (14.7 cm) on included custom stand.

Provenance: private Los Angeles, California, USA collection
