Description
The Balance, Columbian and Repository. [Newspaper]. Hudson [New York]: Tuesday, April 12, 1803. Front page has a lengthy letter to Ambrose Spencer, Esq. which begins “Among all the public knaves who have run the gauntlet of political prostitution, there have been a few only whose turpitude was of such a peculiar nature as to render their names immortal; or as Pope has expressed it, who have been ‘dam’d to everlasting shame.’ Villainy, ...” it decries the English in history and currently and is signed Ezra Sampson. There is another quite lengthy article from “The Charleston Courier of March 4” relating Napoleon Bonaparte’s deeds and misdeeds at some length. Towards the end Shakespeare and Milton are brought in and “..imagine of arrogant imposture, worse than his [Napoleon] having the impudence after what he has done, to hold out the language of promise and expect to have it believed. Alas, alas - farewell the dignity of manhood - ...” A third artilce is titled “Liberty of the Press. Mockery of Justice.” The article is aimed at Attorney General Spencer for outrage on the Liberty of the Press “ ... he draws up, or causes to be drawn up, in his own office, a day or two previous to the sitting of the court, a bill of indictment against the printer for publishing a libel on Thomas Jefferson !!!...”
