Sterling-silver finished napkin holder engraved with "White House Staff Mess" flanked with anchors and "LT H.E. Hirschy, JR. SC, USN" on the verso. 2.5" W x 0.75" H x 0.75" D. Napkin rings weigh approximately 1.585 oz
Manufactured by Galt & Bro and used in The White House Mess dining room. It was customary for White House staffers to use napkin rings until early in the Johnson Administration. However, this practice was discontinued and each staff member was allowed to keep their own as a memento.
These items come directly from the Hirschy family. Lieutenant Hirschy was Supply and Logistics Officer for the Military Aides to the President and Officer-in-Charge of the Navy Mess in the White House during both the Kennedy and Johnson administrations. His duties also included taking care of the President’s needs on overseas trips, aboard the presidential yachts and at Camp David. Lt. Hirschy served in the White House from May 1, 1961 through May 31, 1965.
