Description
Broughton, Lancaster, England, circa 1820's, polychrome painted steel dial with Arabic numerals, lunette painted with crossed peafowl feathers and flowers, spandrels with geometric and fans, signed on face W. Bellman/Broughton. Brass English bell strike weight driven movement with original weights and pendulum. Inlaid oak and mahogany case with bonnet having broken arch crest with original gold painted rosette terminals and central turned finial with marbleized and floral spray painted inset glass panels below arch with string inlay below. Cross banded tombstone door with satinwood string inlaid edge, flanked by full fluted columns with cast brass capitals and plinths. Waist with overlapping string inlaid door with scroll cut top, cut-out with glass panel (later alteration), flanked by fluted quarter columns with turned capitals and plinths, cove molding above and below. Base with string inlay and chamfered corners with lambs tongue terminal at bottom and stepped molding over bracket feet, all in old, likely original varnish finish, pine secondary wood, 21 x 10 x 89 1/2" high.
