Description
Carved from hundreds thin layers of Vermillion red-orange lacquer, of flattened cylindrical form, vertically elevated sides raised from flat base. The exterior deftly carved in deep relief with a scholar gathering scene within terraced garden landscape against geometrical diapers enclosed by a band ring. The sides banded in high relief with camellia blooms and foliate motif. The interior and underside are ebony lacquered. With gilt characters inscriptions on underside cover.
Two initial reign marks on this round box:
Mark on underside cover, an impressed seal mark, with gilt inscriptions, in years of QianLong Reign period.
Mark on base, incised six pale-red scrip -KaiShu- characters mark, XuanDe Reign Period of Great Ming (1425-1435), and of the period.
Dimensions: 11-1/2" Diam. x 3-1/2" H
PROVENANCE:
From the collection of General Chen Qi 陳淇; (1912-2000), who styled himself as Cangquan (滄泉 and Yuquanshanren 玉泉山人), an artist, calligrapher, a prominent businessman and private antiques collector.
