Description
Original Hand Colored Engraving "The Happy Village" Designed and Engraved by J. K. Sherwin, Historical Engraver to His Majesty & to His Royal Highness the Prince of Wales. Published the 1. Sept. 1787 by J. Kirby No. 7 Gresse Street Rathbone Place London. A scene from Oliver Goldsmith's The Deserted Village, written in 1770 to condemn rural depopulation and the pursuit of excessive wealth. One of a pair, see lot 290. John Keyse Sherwin was a well-known and accomplished engraver. A pupil of Bartolozzi. According to Bryan's Dictionary of Painters and Engravers 'he fell into poverty, and died at a tavern which formerly stood where Swallow Street joins Oxford Street in London' (now Oxford Circus). Professionally Framed and Matted Measures 30" x 27" x .75" in frame. Weight 10lbs. PROVENANCE: A Private Charleston SC Estate.
